International Projects
COMENIUS
This is a project supported by The British Council where similar schools in different countries work together on chosen subjects. Each partnership lasts for up to 3 years, but often friendships continue far beyond this.
Between 2003-2006 our school worked with partners in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Finland. The title of our project was ‘Learning through Friendship'. Students studied lifestyle, family, homes, sport and food, working together to discover similarities and differences in each other's culture.
Visits were exchanged with staff and pupils from each of the schools. Partners came to the UK in July 2004 with foreign students being hosted in our pupils' homes. This was reciprocated in May 2005 when staff and pupils from our school visited the Spanish partner.
In 2006 we were fortunate enough to create a partnership with schools in Turley and Poland. This project is called ‘Being a Teenager' and looks at the stresses and strains of teenage life such as; peer pressure, drugs, smoking and healthy lifestyle.
A visit to the UK took place in April 2007 with students from Turkey being hosted by some of our students. Our Polish partner has invited staff and pupils from both UK and turkey to return the visit later this year.
The knowledge pupils gain from visiting these countries and working together with people from other cultures is tremendous and not something they would otherwise experience.
This knowledge promotes understanding of each other and acceptance of differences thus helping to alleviate racism and prejudice. It helps our students become rounded global citizens.
